What to Expect with Clear Aligners: A Patient's Guide from Clinton Dental Group

So you've decided to explore clear aligners - congratulations on taking the first step toward a straighter smile! Whether you're considering Invisalign or Dandy Clear Aligners here at Clinton Dental Group, one of the most common questions we hear is: "What is this actually going to be like?"
This guide answers exactly that. We'll walk you through what happens at every stage of treatment, what to expect day-to-day, and share our best tips for keeping your aligners clean and your treatment on track.
What Are Clear Aligners?
Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, transparent trays that gently and gradually shift your teeth into their ideal positions. Each set of trays is slightly different from the last, moving your teeth a little more with every progression.
At Clinton Dental Group, we offer both Invisalign and Dandy Clear Aligners — two of the most trusted clear aligner systems available. Both use precise digital technology to map your tooth movements from start to finish, giving you and your doctor a clear picture of where your smile is headed before treatment even begins.
Step 1: Your Consultation
Your clear aligner journey begins with a conversation. During your consultation, Dr. Will will:
Review your dental and medical history
Examine your teeth, gums, and bite
Discuss your smile goals and whether clear aligners are the right fit for your case
Answer any questions you have about cost, timeline, and what treatment will look like
Clear aligners are a great option for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, rotated teeth, and gaps between teeth. If your case is a good match, we'll move forward with the next step.
Step 2: Digital Scanning — No Messy Impressions
This is one of our patients' favorite parts. Instead of the traditional putty impressions that can feel uncomfortable (and sometimes trigger a gag reflex), we use our state-of-the-art digital scanner to capture a precise, 3D image of your teeth in minutes.
The scan is quick, comfortable, and incredibly accurate. It becomes the foundation for your entire treatment plan.
Once your scans are complete, we'll use them to design your custom aligners and show you a digital preview of your final smile — so you can see exactly where you're headed before you ever wear a single tray.
Step 3: Your Bonding Appointment
When your custom aligners arrive, you'll come in for your bonding appointment- one of the most important visits in your treatment. Here's what happens:
Attachments: Most patients require small, tooth-colored "buttons" called attachments bonded to certain teeth. These act like handles that help guide specific tooth movements that aligners alone can't accomplish as efficiently. They're made to blend with your tooth color and are removed at the end of treatment. It's normal to feel mild tenderness when you first start wearing trays with attachments — this fades within a day or two.
Your First Set of Aligners You'll try in your first set of trays and we'll make sure the fit is right. Your doctor will walk you through how to insert and remove them properly.

What to Expect That First Week The first few days are the adjustment period. You may notice:
A slight lisp as your tongue gets used to the trays- this typically resolves within a week
Mild pressure or tenderness, especially when switching to a new set - this is a sign the aligners are working!
Increased saliva production initially, which also settles quickly
Most patients find they adapt much faster than they expected.
Step 4: Life During Treatment
Wear Time Is Everything For clear aligners to work, they need to be worn 20 to 22 hours per day. That means they come out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and for brushing and flossing. This is the single most important factor in keeping your treatment on schedule.
Changing Trays You'll progress to a new set of aligners every 2 weeks. Many patients find it easiest to switch trays at night before bed, so the first few hours of adjustment happen while they're sleeping.
Eating and Drinking One of the biggest perks of clear aligners: no food restrictions. Remove your trays before meals, enjoy whatever you like, then brush before putting them back in. The only thing you can drink with aligners in is plain water. Hot beverages can warp the plastic, and anything sugary or acidic can get trapped against your teeth.
Follow-Up Visits After your bonding appointment, check-in visits are typically scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks. These appointments let Dr. Dadouris monitor your progress, confirm your teeth are tracking properly, and address any questions. They're usually quick - most patients are in and out in under 15 minutes.
Step 5: Finishing and Retainers
When you reach your final aligner, your teeth should be in their new, ideal positions, but the work isn't quite done. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back over time, which is why retainers are essential after any orthodontic treatment.
We'll discuss your retainer options and wear schedule at the end of your treatment. The cost of retainers is included in your pretreatment estimate, so there are no surprises. Most patients wear retainers nightly long-term to lock in their results permanently.
Tips and Tricks: How to Keep Your Clear Aligners Clean
This is one of the most common things patients ask us about and for good reason. Cloudy, stained, or smelly aligners are not only unattractive but can also harbor bacteria. Here's how to keep them fresh throughout your treatment:
Rinse Every Time You Remove Them
Whenever you take your aligners out, rinse them under lukewarm water immediately. This prevents dried saliva and bacteria from building up. Never use hot water — it can warp the plastic and ruin the fit.
Brush Your Aligners Gently Twice a Day
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small amount of clear, unscented soap (dish soap works great) to gently brush the inside and outside of your trays. Avoid toothpaste — it's abrasive and can create micro-scratches that make aligners look cloudy and trap more bacteria.
Soak Them Daily
A daily soak in Invisalign cleaning crystals, a denture cleaning tablet, or a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar for 20–30 minutes keeps aligners clear and odor-free. Rinse thoroughly afterward.
Always Brush and Floss Before Reinserting
This is non-negotiable. Putting aligners back over unbrushed teeth traps food and bacteria against your enamel for hours. If you're out and can't brush, at minimum rinse your mouth thoroughly with water before reinserting your trays then brush as soon as you can.
Never Eat or Drink (Except Water) with Aligners In
Food particles get trapped under the trays, and sugary or acidic drinks can accelerate tooth decay when held against your teeth by the aligner. Always remove them before eating or drinking anything other than plain water.
Store Them in Their Case
When your aligners aren't in your mouth, they should be in their case not wrapped in a napkin (a leading cause of accidentally throwing them away!) and not exposed on a counter where they can collect airborne bacteria or get damaged.
Keep a Travel Kit
Put together a small bag to carry with you: your aligner case, a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, floss, and a small bottle of water. This makes it easy to maintain your routine wherever you are.
What If Something Goes Wrong?
Lost an aligner? Contact our office right away. Depending on where you are in your treatment sequence, we may recommend wearing your previous set, moving forward to the next, or ordering a replacement.
Aligners not fitting right? If a tray doesn't seat properly, don't force it. Call us- something may not be tracking as expected and we'll want to take a look.
Attachments feel rough or sharp? A small amount of orthodontic wax can help smooth any irritating spots while your mouth adjusts or you can use a clean nail file to polish the rough edge.
How Long Will Treatment Take?
For most mild to moderate cases we treat at Clinton Dental Group, clear aligner treatment ranges from 6 to 14 months. More complex cases may take longer. The most important factor you control is wear time — patients who wear their aligners the full 20–22 hours a day consistently finish on schedule or even ahead of it.
How Much Do Clear Aligners Cost?
Treatment at Clinton Dental Group is typically around $4,500, though cost varies based on the complexity and length of your case. Many dental insurance plans contribute up to $3,000 in orthodontic benefits, and clear aligners are FSA and HSA eligible. We also offer flexible payment plans to make treatment work within your budget.
